In an updated press release on Tuesday, the Sheriff’s office said that on Oct. 11, Micah Smith, 31, and his three children went for a hike near the area of Broads Fork Trail up Big Cottonwood Canyon. The family was later reported missing.
Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, DPS Aero Bureau, and Life Flight responded and began aerial search efforts. First responders were able to find the missing family Sunday morning after having been stranded overnight.
Law enforcement shared that Smith is in stable condition, the eight-year-old girl has been discharged from the hospital, the four-year-old is in critical condition, and the two-year-old is in stable condition.
The family shared in a GoFundMe that the four-year-old is being kept alive by a heart and lung bypass machine.
This situation remains an active investigation.
