Texans urged to keep up with carbon monoxide detectors

AUSTIN, Texas (KETK) — The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) is asking Texans to install carbon monoxide detectors and to keep up with system maintenance ahead of winter time because the gas poses a deadly threat.

According to the TDLR, carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless and colorless gas that becomes deadly when inhaled in high concentrations. With cold winter weather coming in the next couple of months, heating systems will be used more frequently and the chances of a leak increase.

The TDLR recommends that residents hire professionals to either install carbon monoxide detectors or inspect existing systems to ensure that homes are venting the gas properly.

“Checking whether your contractor is licensed, and that the technician servicing your equipment is registered with TDLR, is an important step in protecting yourself from shoddy and dangerous work,” TDLR air conditioning and refrigeration program chief William Weatherly said. “Licensed contractors and registered technicians have undergone a criminal background check and have had the required training. Licensed contractors have passed a comprehensive exam and complete yearly continuing education classes.”

Homes that are heated with natural gas or propane should have carbon monoxide detectors placed outside sleeping areas, according to the TDLR. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include, but are not limited to headaches, weakness, blurred vision and vomiting.
