Stranded hiker rescued from Mount Superior by Salt Lake County SAR
At 7:04 p.m. Saturday, Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (SAR) was called to assist a stranded hiker who was “cliffed out” on the south ridge of Mount Superior, up Little Cottonwood Canyon.
The hiker, who had set our earlier Saturday in an attempt to summit the mountain, found themselves off trail as a snowstorm traveled into the Wasatch Mountains.
Amid temperatures dropping below 30 degrees and limited visibility to blowing snow, the hiker called for help.
SAR teams staged near the base of Alta Ski Resort and sent two teams up the mountain. After a steep, nearly hour and a half ascent, contact was finally made with the hiker.
As crews “assessed a cliff-edge traverse through a waterfall to the subject,” the storm began to calm, allowing a Utah DPS helicopter to perform a hoist rescue.
The hiker, in a hypothermic state, was hoisted to an ambulance, and transported to a hospital in stable condition.
All teams were clear of the scene around midnight, Salt Lake County Sheriff’s SAR said.
