State Patrol: Alcohol not a factor in fatal Wood Lake firetruck crash

The driver in a fatal Yellow Medicine County firetruck accident was not impaired at the time of the crash, State Patrol officials say.

An incident report from the State Patrol says alcohol was not involved in the crash, although all three occupants were unbelted.

According to court records, around 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 26, a Wood Lake firetruck was heading northbound on 490th Street, just north of Cottonwood, when it veered into the east shoulder and hit a mailbox.

The firetruck overcorrected and rolled several times before landing in the westbound ditch.

A 6-year-old boy was seriously injured, and retired firefighter Patrick Steven Remiger, 43, was found underneath the truck and pronounced dead at the scene, court records state.

The 37-year-old man driving the firetruck was brought to the hospital with serious injuries.

As previously reported, an affidavit filed Sept. 30 stated that several Keystone Light 12-ounce cans were found close to the firetruck.

Authorities say the firetruck and those inside were in Cottonwood, taking part in the Lakeview homecoming events.
