Opening for first T&T Supermarket in Bay Area delayed

(KRON) — Fans looking forward to the first T&T Supermarket in the Bay Area will have to wait a bit longer. The opening of the Canada-based Asian grocery has been delayed, T&T Supermarket CEO Tina Lee said in a video post on social media.

T&T was slated for a grand opening this fall at San Jose’s Westgate shopping center, KRON4 reported in January, but has now been delayed. Lee has officially ruled out a grand opening this year, and the opening is now scheduled for spring 2026.

Lee said that power issues in the store’s construction have delayed the opening. The crews are relying on a temporary power source, but the CEO said her team needs a permanent and more stable power source to progress construction.

“I have some disappointing news for our friends in San Jose, but the store is delayed. No, not happy about it,” Lee said in the video. “We’re very much on the backs of the utility companies to get us going. Understandably though, California has a lot to do on energy and power. I remember the crazy fires from last year, and there’s a lot of backlog because of that.”

“As our first store in California, we want this to be perfect so please be patient with us,” the post’s caption reads.

The San Jose supermarket, located at 1600 Saratoga Ave., is expected to generate about 200 jobs. It takes over the space once occupied by a Walmart that opened in 2012. T&T announced earlier this year that it would open its second Bay Area location in San Francisco.

T&T Supermarket is referred to as “Canada’s favorite Asian grocery retailer,” according to a company press release. The supermarket says it is the largest Asian grocery store chain in Canada. It was founded in 1993 in Vancouver and now operates more than 33 stores across British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec.

“For now San Jose, looks like you’re going to need to wait until… all I can say is spring. I think summer is really far away,” Lee said. “The early half of 2026 is when you’re going to see San Jose. So big apologies guys.”
