BURKE COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A man has been charged after allegedly attempting to steal a law enforcement vehicle after a crash in Morganton, according to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 10:50 p.m. on Saturday, October 11, officers responded to a crash near the Hidden Hill Wedding Venue on Burkemont Road. When they arrived, they saw that a blue Toyota Camry had traveled off the right side of the road and down an embankment.

While at the scene, first responders saw the driver, later identified as 62-year-old Arthur Andres Hoyle II, stealing one of their vehicles, officials said. Shortly after authorities tried to stop him, Hoyle lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a different embankment.

Officers reportedly responded to that crash site but could not find Hoyle in or around the vehicle. After a search, he was found at the base of the mountain and was taken into custody without further incident.

Hoyle was charged with felony larceny of a motor vehicle after being taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. He was booked into the Burke County Sheriff’s Office under a $40,000 bond.
