Loyola announces funeral arrangements for Sister Jean
CHICAGO — Loyola University Chicago announced funeral arrangements Monday for Sister Jean.

The icon passed away at the age of 106 on Thursday.

Sister Jean, born Dolores Bertha Schmidt on Aug. 21, 1919, joined the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1937.

In 1994, Sister Jean became an academic advisor with the men’s basketball team and later transitioned to team chaplain.

She became famous across the country during Loyola men’s basketball’s improbable 2018 run to the Final Four.

Her funeral mass will be open on a first-come, first-serve basis. Her wake is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at Madonna della Strada Chapel, located on the Loyola campus.

The chapel will open at 4 p.m. and visitation will last from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The chapel opens at 9 a.m. for her 10 a.m. funeral service at Madonna della Strada Chapel on Thursday, Oct. 16. A livestream will be hosted on Loyola’s website.

A community reception will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the Damen Student Center.
