Help Abilene Salvation Army serve hundreds this Thanksgiving
Though Thanksgiving may be more than a month away, Kitchen Supervisor for the Abilene Salvation Army, Teresa Harden, is hard at work with preparations to ensure those who may not have a place to celebrate don’t miss out on this time of fellowship.
“We just want to be able to furnish them a good meal, a hot meal, let them get full and just be able to enjoy Thanksgiving here at the Salvation Army as a family,” Harden explained.
The Salvation Army of Abilene ordinarily serves up to 100 individuals daily. However, for their annual Thanksgiving feast, the numbers can increase to more than 500 people that day. Major Joe Burton is the new Commander of the Abilene Salvation Army and shared that volunteers are essential to serve the feast.
“That day, we can use 30 to 40 volunteers. The more the merrier, especially during that time of the season, because we all want to give, especially during Thanksgiving. We may be able to go home and sit down at our tables, but there are those who can’t and who come to our table, and we need those individuals to help serve them,” Burton shared.
Items being sought include chicken broth, green beans, fried onions, turkeys and several other items associated with a Thanksgiving meal.
For more information on how to donate food to the Abilene Salvation Army, or if you are interested in volunteering, visit the Salvation Army at 1726 Butternut Street, or call them at (325) 677-1408.
