Deadly shooting at Indy gas station caught on camera

INDIANAPOLIS – A deadly shooting at a gas station on Indy’s southwest side was caught on camera.

The homicide marked one of two deadly shootings in the span of less than 24 hours over the weekend.

Wearing a bright orange shirt, the video captures a young man walking over to the passenger side of a white pickup truck at a Marathon gas station on Kentucky Avenue just before 7 p.m. Saturday.

10 seconds later, the same man walks around to the driver’s side of the truck. That leads to some sort of dispute that can’t be seen or heard on camera, but ended with the victim being shot in the parking lot.

The motive for the deadly shooting at the gas station remains a mystery.

Almost a full minute following the shooting, during which multiple people walked away from the scene, the pickup truck drove off, leaving the victim lying on the ground.

At that point, police were alerted to the scene.

“A 911 caller advised there was a person down in the lot out here,” said IMPD Officer Drew Brown.

IMPD said officers on the southwest side were also nearby and heard the shots being fired Saturday night.

Police quickly arrived, and the victim was rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, he died a short time later.

Several people were detained, but the shooter appeared to leave before he could be questioned.

The next day, just after 5 p.m. Sunday, police were called to a home along Dickson Road on Indy’s northeast side and found another man shot.

That victim also died after being taken to the hospital.

“This is the second time in 24 hours I’ve had to break the news of a homicide,” said Brown, who responded to both scenes.

Brown said the shooting on Sunday stemmed from an argument between two people. One person was detained, but later released.

Brown says while the two deaths aren’t related in any way, they do share the same message.

“We cannot pull the trigger on our neighbors. We cannot raise a gun in anger and take the life of someone else over a temporary dispute. There has to be a better way,” said Brown. “We have to do better as a community.”

So far, no arrests have been made in either of the homicides.

Anyone with information about the Dickson Road incident should call Detective Steven Gray at the IMPD Homicide Office at (317) 327-3475 or email the detective at Steven.Gray@indy.gov

Anyone with information about the Kentucky Avenue incident should call Detective Kristina Friel at the IMPD Homicide Office at (317) 327-3475 or email the detective at Kristina.Friel@indy.gov
