CALHOUN COUNTY, W.Va. (WOWK) – A Calhoun County commissioner charged with 50 counts of sexual abuse of a child has submitted a resignation letter.
Kevin Harris, attorney for the Calhoun County Commission, says he received a resignation letter from Commissioner Jacob McCumbers on Thursday morning.
McCumbers, who is also a first-grade elementary school teacher, is accused of sexually abusing a child around 50 times over the course of several years. He is currently out of jail on a $100,000 bond and is under home confinement. His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 20.
At a commission meeting on Monday, Sept. 24, members of the community called for McCumbers to be removed from the commission. The other two commissioners, one of whom, Craig Arthur, is facing unrelated misdemeanor tax charges, said they first asked counsel to explore options for McCumbers’ removal during a special meeting the week prior.
The letter is on the Commission’s agenda for the meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 14. The remaining commissioners will vote on whether to accept the resignation.
