Shreveport city councilman condemns violence at family event

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – A teen was fatally injured in a shooting during what was supposed to be a family-friendly community event, and Shreveport City Councilman Alan Jackson shared how this incident has scarred the community he represents.

A block party promoted as a kid-friendly event at A. B. Palmer Park in Cedar Grove was an opportunity for neighbors to get to know one another through food and fun times, until police said two suspects fired shots at one another inside the park.

“I was on site and saw firsthand how quickly violence can dismantle the spirit of a community. What should have been a moment of connection and joy turned into heartbreak and fear. This cannot become the norm for our neighborhoods,” Jackson shared in his message.

Jackson said he was deeply saddened and angered by the senseless act of violence that erupted during a time that was meant to unite the community, saying, “The fatal shooting at the National Night Out event has left our city shaken and heartbroken.”

Shreveport police said there is video of the shooting and investigators “know the individuals who were involved,” and will be searching for them. SPD warned the involved parties to turn themselves in and avoid further escalating the incident.

Jackson said, “My sincerest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the victim. I also want to extend my thoughts and prayers to all the children and parents who witnessed this horrific tragedy. No one, especially not our young people, should have to experience such trauma in a place that is supposed to represent safety, togetherness, and hope.”

A.B. Palmer Park is part of District E, which is represented on the city council by Jackson. He is urging the community to come together not only to grieve but to demand change. He said the community and the children of Shreveport deserve better. Jackson concluded his statement by saying, “Let this tragedy strengthen our resolve to stand against violence and to build a safer, more compassionate Shreveport for everyone.”

Contrary to information spread on social media, Shreveport Police say the community block party was not an “official” National Night Out Event.
