TYLER, Texas (KETK) – Thanks to a new law passed by the Texas Legislature this year, Texas students can apply to public colleges and universities for free during the week of Oct. 13.

Senate Bill 2231 was passed during the 89th Texas Legislative session and signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott on May 21. The law requires all public universities and colleges to waive any application fees for one week of the year for students who apply through the ApplyTexas portal.

Applications from first-time and transfer students will be accepted through the portal between Oct. 13 and Oct. 19. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board estimates that the average college application fee in Texas is around $50. To learn more or to apply, visit ApplyTexas online.
