Man charged after burglary, attempted sexual assault at senior living facility in Silver Spring

SILVER SPRING, Md. (DC News Now) — A Montgomery County man is facing several charges after he allegedly broke into a senior living facility in Silver Spring, assaulting multiple women in the process, police said Friday.

Officers arrested Darrell Dwayne Cousar, 31, of Silver Spring, in connection with the crimes, which reportedly took place on the night of Oct. 8.

The Montgomery County Department of Police said the investigation began when officers responded to The Oaks at Four Corners apartment complex around 8:30 p.m. that day for a reported burglary.

There, police learned that Cousar had allegedly assaulted an older woman in order to force his way into the secure residential building. From there, he began knocking on doors inside the complex, reportedly assaulting a second woman when she opened her apartment door.

A third woman told officers that when she opened her door, she saw Cousar exposing himself. Cousar then allegedly grabbed the older woman and tried to sexually assault her, prompting the woman to scream for help.

Nearby residents heard the woman’s screams and came out of their rooms to help her, while some of the residents called 911. Meanwhile, Cousar ran out of the building, according to police.

When police arrived at the complex, they obtained a description of Cousar and began scouring the area. However, officers ended up finding Cousar while responding to a separate call a short time later for a trespasser on the fourth floor of a building in the 10700 block of Columbia Pike, police noted.

A short time later, the victims identified Cousar as the suspect in the attempted sexual assault and burglary.

Officers took Cousar into custody, transporting him to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit on charges of attempted second-degree rape, second-degree assault, third-degree burglary, third-degree sex offense, indecent exposure and disorderly conduct.

He is being held without bond.

DC News Now reached out to The Oaks at Four Corners for a statement regarding the incident at the facility but did not hear back in time for publication.
