A defendant in the Feeding Our Future fraud investigation changed his plea to guilty on Friday afternoon, just days ahead of his trial at the federal courthouse in Minneapolis.

Abdiwahab Mohamud admitted to wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering connected to false claims that he and others were making and serving free meals to children during the pandemic, under the sponsorship of Feeding Our Future.

Investigators say Mohamud was part of a group that stole more than $17 million from the Federal Child Nutrition Program.

All of his other codefendants had already taken plea deals, but Mohamud was still scheduled to on trial later this month.

Mohamud was out of custody, pending the outcome of his trial, until Monday. That’s when prosecutors accused him of witness tampering and Judge Nancy Brasel revoked Mohamud’s release. He’s been behind bars since then.

76 people have been charged overall in connection to Feeding Our Future.
