Child injured in shooting near Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A child was injured during a shooting near Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson.

Interim Jackson Police Chief and Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said the shooting occurred near the tailgate section of the stadium on West Street on October 11, 2025. The shooting happened the day of Jackson State University’s homecoming game.

According to Jones, the injured child was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) by Jackson police officers in a patrol vehicle. Bailey Martin, spokesperson for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (MDPS), said the child was shot in the abdomen.

Jones said Capitol police and Jackson police are investigation the shooting. There is no suspect information at this time.
