(WOWK) — Fall is here, and everyone is getting in on the spooky season, including video games! Fortnite just released its annual Halloween update, and folks from the Mountain State may run into a familiar face!
In the new Fortnite Battle Royale modes’ map “Nitemare Island,” folks exploring the new territory may get a glimpse of none other than West Virginia’s own Mothman.
Mothman is a non-playable character, but he’s not irrelevant to the story, and he’s one of many in this Halloween’s cast of characters. According to Fortnite’s website, an animated version of singer Doja Cat leads a haunted kingdom with a variety of spooky characters from Jason and Ghost Face to Wednesday Addams and even the cast of Scooby-Doo!
WOWK 13 News Reporter Blake DeJarnatt has already tried his hand at the new update and ran into the Mothman during gameplay.
**GAME SPOILERS BELOW**
In the game, Mothman is part of the Scooby-Doo side quest, and he’s up to a bit of mischief. Mystery Inc.’s Daphne Blake will ask the player for help finding her missing iconic headbands. And, SPOILER ALERT, the thief you’re searching for is none other than Point Pleasant’s own legendary cryptid.
But our Mothman has a remorseful heart. Upon speaking with the Mothman, he becomes apologetic and gives the hair accessories back, along with an XP boost for your player!
This is not the Mothman’s first video game appearance. In 2018, the cryptid made an appearance in Fallout 76, which was set in apocalyptic West Virginia. In 2024, Mothman also earned his own “Magic: The Gathering” card as part of a crossover between the Magic and Fallout franchises.
