Mays said Shawnee County is facing the same WIC funding issues as Lyon County. He said the WIC office at the county’s health department may lose funding.
“We’re kind of in a spot where we’re trying to figure out do we kind of tap into some of our reserves to keep that office operational or do we just close it down until the time comes that the funding comes back in,” Mays said.
A Kansas Department of Health and Environment spokeswoman, Jill Bronaugh, said the KDHE received a little more than $1 million for WIC funding, which should allow the KDHE to sustain benefits through October this year.
