Select Specialty Hospital, a national health care provider that operates on the campus of Sanford USD Medical Center, is closing its Sioux Falls location by the end of the year.
The 24-bed hospital, which is a recovery hospital for critically ill patients, has operated in leased space that Sanford now requires to support its growth, according to a statement from Select Medical.
“As a result, Select Medical will be departing the Sioux Falls market after serving the community for more than 20 years,” it said.
“As the hospital winds down operations, our priority will remain on delivering exceptional post-acute care and ensuring a safe, seamless transition of our patients to home or the next level of necessary care.”
According to its website, the hospital in Sioux Falls specializes “in helping critically ill patients breathe, speak, eat, walk and think as independently as possible.”
Select Medical operates a national network of 140 hospitals. Employees in Sioux Falls will be able to apply for positions in the network, and “we are also working with Sanford Health to guide those impacted to explore potential roles within the local health system,” it said.
“Sanford Health is thankful for our valued partnership with Select during the last 13 years,” said Andy Munce, president and CEO of Sanford Sioux Falls.
“Our shared priority is to ensure a seamless transition of care for their patients and families. As acute care needs in our community continue to grow, we value this opportunity to expand in-demand services for our patients. We are working on plans to repurpose the existing space at the Sanford USD Medical Center for inpatient growth and expansion.”
