LAYTON, Utah (ABC4) — A Layton apartment building is a total loss after a fire, leaving over 80 residents having to evacuate.

At 5:48 a.m. on Friday, fire crews responded to a building fire at Layton Meadows at 540 West and 1425 North in Layton. According to Clint Drake with Layton City, the fire is contained, but still actively being treated.

Drake said that 37 residents have been displaced. The building is a total loss.

All occupants are accounted for. Two officers were transported and treated for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The American Red Cross is also on scene and helping residents who have been displaced. They have opened up an emergency shelter that is located at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 202 W 1675 N, Layton, UT.

Sarah Marshall with the American Red Cross said that she is seeing a lot of people on-scene in disbelief. She said that this situation can be used as a reminder to be prepared for tragic incidents such as this one.

“Plans are worthless, but being prepared is everything,” Marshall said.

Anyone who wants to learn more about how to be prepared can reach out to the American Red Cross.

There was a similar incident at the same apartment complex in 2019.
