The Minnesota Department of Corrections announced it is investigating the death of an inmate at the Rush City Prison as a possible homicide.

Corrections officers responded to a report of an inmate down in his cell around 1:26 p.m. on Thursday. They found an unresponsive man with “obvious injuries,” authorities said.

Despite first aid, the man was pronounced deceased.

While the death is still under investigation, authorities say preliminary information suggests that there was an altercation between the man and his cellmate.

The man’s identity is being withheld pending full notification of his family.

The DOC’s Office of Special Investigations, the Chisago County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are all investigating.
