CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A woman has been charged after allegedly hitting and killing a pedestrian in Steele Creek, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Around 8:20 a.m. on Monday, October 6, officers responded to a crash involving a pedestrian in the 9700 block of Shopton Road. When they arrived, they found an unresponsive man on the road.

The man, 76-year-old Hanh Hoang, was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, but later died, police said.

The driver, 41-year-old Alma Monica Velaseuz, and her Toyota Camry stayed at the scene. Investigators believe Hoang was crossing Shopton Road in a marked crosswalk when he was struck by the Toyota.

Velasquez was not impaired nor speeding at the time of the crash, officials said. She was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle for failing to yield the right of way to a pedestrian.

CMPD says this is still an active investigation.
