ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Village Green Home & Garden, one of Rockford’s oldest nurseries, announced the sale of its business on Thursday.

Co-owners Carolyn and Cynthia Smith announced the sale to Platt Hill Nursery, run by Graham and Clark Hill.

Village Green said its business operations will conclude after the Christmas season in December.

Platt Hill Nursery Rockford will open in its place in time for spring 2026.

Village Green is a nursery and casual furniture store, featuring a greenhouse, garden center, gift shop, and education center and was founded by Laurence Smith and William Swadley.

The business celebrated 60 years in Rockford this year. The nursery was founded in 1965 at Alpine & Newburg Roads before moving to 2640 N Main Street and expanding to 6101 E Riverside Blvd.

In 2024, the company announced it would be closing the N. Main Street store and consolidating business to the Riverside Blvd location.

Platt Hill nursey was founded in the 1800s by David Hill, who was commissioned by the Royal Botanic Garden in England to come to the United States in search of new plant material. That lead to the formation of the Platt Hill Nursery in the 1980s.

Platt Hill Nursery currently has operations in both Bloomingdale and Carpentersville.

“We could not have asked for a better buyer for the Riverside operations,” said Cynthia Smith. “As a fourth -generation family-owned business, they share our values and commitment to the local community,” added Carolyn Smith.

“As a plant first brand, we are excited by the opportunity to bring our strong history in trees, shrubs and plants to the Rockford community” said Graham Hill.
