Tara Jackson said Wednesday that Michael Collins was indicted on theft, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, unauthorized removal of a motor vehicle, rogue and vagabond and conspiracy to commit unauthorized removal of a motor vehicle charges.
The charges stemmed from a crash in Seat Pleasant that left 35-year-old Shaunte Canty dead.
The indictment comes nearly a month after the Seat Pleasant Police Department charged four teenagers in the case.
“My office remains committed to pursuing justice for Shaunte and her family, and that means holding individuals, including juveniles, accountable for their actions,” said Jackson.
The Deadly Crash
The collision happened on Aug. 26 after officers noticed a stolen car in the Seat Pleasant Drive and Joplin Street area.
Officers with the Seat Pleasant Police Department began following the car from a distance but did not turn on the cruiser lights to initiate a pursuit. The police department noted that shortly after, officers were informed to disengage from any further attempts to follow the car.
As police were returning to the city, they noticed the stolen car had been involved in a crash.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the stolen car began to accelerate on Sheriff Road toward Martin Luther King Jr. Highway. The car then reportedly ran a red light and slammed into the side of Canty’s car, killing her.
Canty’s 2-year-old child was in the car during the crash.
