Taylorsville man accused of using Kik to obtain child sexual abuse material online

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (ABC4) — A Taylorsville man was arrested and charged after police allegedly connected him to a Kik account that had been downloading child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

Nathan Moffett, 47, was charged Monday with 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony.

According to court documents, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) forwarded a tipline involving a Kik account that had allegedly downloaded CSAM. Kik is a social media app, and has been connected to the exploitation of children in several cases.

The South Jordan Police Department began investigating the tip that was shared by NCMEC and discovered eight files that included CSAM. Police stated that the files depicted children between the ages of one and 17. The tip also contained usernames, an IP address, and an email associated with the account.

A search warrant served on the IP address connected it to a plasma donation center instead of one individual, documents say. The South Jordan Police officer working the case wrote a warrant to Kik to obtain additional information about the alleged account user.

He received several selfies of the account’s user, alongside additional files of CSAM, and the user’s name: Nathan. In some of the selfies, the officer observed a logo for the plasma donation company that matched the IP address. Documents say that he appeared to be in the break room of the building.

The officer used a facial recognition software, which allegedly matched the selfies to a man named Nathan Moffett with a 99.98% match. After discovering his name, the South Jordan officer wrote a subpoena to the plasma donation company to obtain his work schedule.

After performing surveillance on Moffett using his work schedule, a warrant was served at his residence on Oct. 2, 2025. Moffett was taken into custody at his workplace and brought to the police station for an interview.

Before the interview, the arresting officer reviewed Moffett’s phone and allegedly found that he had at least one CSAM file saved to his photos. It matched one of the images that were located on his Kik account, documents say.

During the police interview, Moffett admitted that he had downloaded the illegal material “out of curiosity.” Moffett was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail, where he is being held without bail.

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
