Pleasant Grove offense seeing more pieces click each week

TEXARKANA, TX (KTAL/KMSS) — Pleasant Grove begins its district schedule this week as the Hawks play host to North Lamar.

Looking back on the first five games of the season, some of the biggest growth can be seen in the offense. New pieces click each week, and last game against Sunnyvale one piece was quarterback Colt Yancey. Yancey was 25 of 33, throwing for 371 yards and four touchdowns.

“I think that’s familiarity with our receivers and us kind of expanding on what we do, which made it easier on him, but we had to get down the fundamentals first,” head coach Josh Gibson said.

One of those receivers is Kamdyn “Bam” Harris, who made up 131 of those yards receiving on eight receptions.

“Bam Harris is one of those receivers, he just plays so physical after the catch and so his YAC, his yards after the catch, is extremely high. He’s just so country strong and he’s running through a guy and then running through two guys and looks like they’re gonna take him down and he gets 4 more yards after that contact just because he’s so physically strong and he’s long and he just had a really good game,” Gibson said.

Another piece of the offense that has come together not just last game, but over the season, is Walker Wright. In his senior season, Wright has made the transition from quarterback to h-back.

“I was all for it,” Wright said. “Coach G talked to me about it and I was like, yeah, absolutely. I’ll go play H-back and take that role in and go try to be the best I can be at it.”

Wright has attacked his new role to the best of his abilities. So far on the season he has 13 receptions for 192 yards and three touchdowns.

“He has been an absolute weapon for us, one of the best H-backs, I think in high school football. I think he’s gonna have an opportunity to go play at the next level and he’s a captain like guy off the field and then his production on the field has been something that I’m really proud of him and our team is too,” Gibson said.

The Hawks next game is on Friday, October 10 against North Lamar at 7 pm.
