Written from press release
Greencastle, Ind. — October 8, 2025 — The Indiana State Police Putnamville District is warning Hoosiers about a phone scam in which individuals threaten victims and demand money in the form of gift cards.
Troopers have received reports from citizens who were told that if they didn’t comply, the caller would come to their home and cause them harm.
Police advise residents not to trust caller ID information, as scammers can spoof numbers to appear as local, national, or even family contacts. If you receive a call from an unfamiliar number, do not answer. Legitimate callers will typically leave a voicemail. If you’re unsure, hang up and contact the agency or person directly using a verified number.
The Indiana State Police emphasize that scammers are often persuasive, convincing, and technically savvy, preying on emotions and fear to obtain money or personal data.
“Phone scams have become nothing short of an epidemic,” the release states. “Being aware of potential scams is a great first step in protecting yourself from falling victim to one.”
