Democrats, Republicans throw jabs at each other over unresolved Pennsylvania budget

(WHTM) — There is still no progress on getting a Pennsylvania budget done that was due in June, and the hostility between the two parties may be getting even worse.

“I’m not going to vote on taxing an already highly taxed population even more,” said State Rep. Jesse Topper (R-Fulton/Bedford).

Democrats fired back.

“Our friends that lead the Senate Republican Caucus refuse to negotiate in good faith,” said Speaker of the House State Rep. Joanna McClinton (D-Delaware/Philadelphia).

Signifying nothing, as in no budget, now 100 days late.

“I think what, what we’re pretty confident in is they can’t they can’t get 26 Republican votes for anything,” said Appropriations Chairman Senator Vincent Hughes (D–Montgomery/Philadelphia).

They, as in Senate Republicans, who have only passed a repeat of last year’s budget. House Democrats keep passing a $50 billion-plus budget the GOP calls “too costly.”

“None of this has been because we didn’t want to do anything,” said President Pro Tempore Senator Kim Ward (R-Westmoreland). “It’s been because their numbers have been so high.”

Republicans say they want policy changes in energy, schools and Medicaid. Democrats say all are negotiable, but the GOP is stalling to harm the re-election chances of a popular governor.

“This is about politics, not policy,” said State Rep. Matt Bradford (D-Montgomery). “I respect you deeply. I want you know something. I believe there isn’t a policy issue that we couldn’t come to agreement with. I would tell you, it’s politics, plain and simple.”

“Today has been a day of high rhetoric in this building,” Senator Joe Pittman (R-Indiana) said. “Unfortunately, it’s been a day of little substance.”

The Ryan Building library is one of several lovely spaces leaders could use to lock themselves inside and not leave until a deal’s done. Which has bipartisan support.

“We should do that,” Senator Jay Costa (D-Allegheny) said. “We did that in the past. Whenever Rendell, Governor Rendell, we would meet at the governor’s residence night after night and went through it line by line.”

“Just like everybody talks about getting in a room,” State Rep. Sheryl Delozier (R-Cumberland) said. “Yes, absolutely. We should get in a room.”

Perhaps sequestering in a room like this isn’t a bad idea, what with its mural of Pickett’s Charge. Perhaps there could be inspiration of Pennsylvanians in great conflict.
