Groves was the last of ten inmates who escaped from the Orleans Parish Jail in May. His arrest was the result of a coordinated effort by state police, who used gas canisters and a K-9 unit to locate him in a crawlspace in the basement of a house.
The operation to capture Groves took approximately three hours, during which multiple gas canisters were deployed into the house.
According to Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, a pistol and 15 pounds of marijuana were discovered at the scene, and Groves was not alone, suggesting that more arrests are anticipated.
Groves will be arraigned once he is returned to Louisiana and will be taken to Angola, where the other nine escapees are currently held. Murrill made after a news conference on capture of Groves.
“Tonight, I stood united with Louisiana State Police, along with our State, local, and federal partners to detail the arrest of Derrick Groves,” said Murril. “Groves was the most violent of all the inmates who escaped the Orleans Justice Center back in May, with at least four bodies to his name. He will spend the rest of his life in the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola. Anyone who may have helped him will also be arrested and prosecuted. A lot of people will sleep much better tonight knowing this convicted murderer is finally back in custody.”
