Speaker Johnson criticizes Senate Democrats for government shutdown

LOUISIANA (KTAL/KMSS) — House Speaker Mike Johnson has stated that Senate Democrats need to stop holding the American government hostage.

In a recent press release, Johnson accused Democrats of prioritizing a government shutdown over the needs of the American people. During a series of interviews on the ‘Clay and Buck Show,’ ‘The VINCE Show,’ and ‘The Hugh Hewitt Show,’ he elaborated on his belief that Democrats are holding progress.

In discussions about reopening the government, Johnson stated, “Democrats seem not to care. They put their own self-interest above those people that you’re referring to. Do the right thing. We have plenty of time to debate our policy differences. Don’t hold these young families as hostages for this nonsense. And that’s exactly what’s happening right now.”

When it came to other state leaders, Louisiana Congressman Troy Carter Sr. issued a statement last month, criticizing Republicans for the government shutdown. He stated, “I want to be crystal clear about why we are at risk of a government shutdown: Republicans control the House. Republicans control the Senate. Republicans control the White House. This shutdown is entirely of their making.”

In his statement, Carter expressed that Democrats are “ready, willing, and able to do the work of the American people.” He stated that the bill proposed by Republicans represents the largest healthcare cut in American history. Carter claims the bill would not only slash essential services but also drive costs higher for working families.

The government shutdown is entering its second week, as leaders from both parties struggle to reach an agreement. Johnson canceled plans for the House to return to Washington, stating on Monday that there was nothing for them to negotiate.
