KEARNS, Utah (ABC4) — A Kearns family has lost their pet dog and their home to a house firre.

Shortly after 10 a.m., Unified Fire Authority said they received 911 calls reporting a house fire near 5415 W in Kearns.

Fire crews arrived to see heavy smoke and flames both in the front and back of the structure.

Two people were in the home with a pet dog. The individuals escaped the fire unharmed. Firefighters attempted resuscitation, but despite all efforts to revive it, the dog succumbed to its injuries.

West Valley and Unified Fire Authority (UFA) units responded. No injuries occurred to those working the fire.

There was initial difficulty putting out the fire in the attic of the home due to newer roof construction, but it is now under control. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The American Red Cross has been called to the scene to support the displaced family.

“The home looks like it’s probably going to be a total loss,” Kelly Bird.

The majority of the work is complete, crews are remaining on scene to ensure hot spots are out and their equipment is cleaned up.

Bird reminds people to follow fire prevention recommendations — have working smoke detectors, keep combustible items away from homes, check electric and lithium ion battery operated objects, and have water or a fire extinguisher on hand.
