As of Wednesday, California still bans public funds from financing local political campaigns; however, that could soon change. This comes after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed off on a 2026 ballot measure to allow cities and counties to finance local political campaigns with taxpayers’ dollars.
If the ballot gets approved by the voters, it will repeal the ban. Santan Ana Democratic State Senator Tom Umberg and San Jose Democratic Assemblymember Alex Lee are in support of this proposal.
Lee said, “When you create public finance election systems, it mitigates the power of big special interest donors, the billionaire class.”
Umberg stated that this will help balance the playing field.
“It helps to level the playing field so that there’s someone that has a passion for, either their city or a particular issue that they can run, and have some chance,” Umberg said.
Supporters also note the proposal would not requres local governments to publicly finance campaigns. It would give thgem the option to do so should they wish.
At least 26 local governbments have implented some sort of public campaig nfianicng nationwide, which includes approved pilot programs in select California cities Los Angeles and Berkeley.
The idea received a bipartisan support in the legislature, but, several republicans argue public funds could better spent on other things.
“The public doesn’t want limited, scarce tax dollars going into politics, particularly when you’re telling them we have to raise taxes and cut important government services,” Assmblymemebr Carl Demaio said.
Whats’ next? Voters will ultimatelt decided next year, in the general election which is set to take place on Nov. 3, 2026.
