Beshear asks Robertson County sheriff to resign after 3rd DUI arrest in 2 years

FRANKFORT, Ky. (FOX 56) — On Wednesday, Gov. Andy Beshear requested that the Robertson County sheriff resign after he was arrested on Tuesday on his third DUI charge in two years.

According to court documents, Robertson County Sheriff Terry Gray was arrested after allegedly driving drunk with his emergency lights on and in uniform.

“We ask that you tender your resignation as the Robertson County Sheriff to the Robertson County Judge/Executive within five business days of your receipt of this letter. If you do not tender your resignation, the Governor will move forward with removal under KRS 63 .100 for neglect of duty, including, but not limited to, the commission of a wrongful act in the perfonnance of official duty, habitual drunkenness in office, and gross immorality or misconduct in office amounting to neglect of duty,” read a letter from the Office of the Governor.

Rep. William Lawrence, who serves Robertson County, responded to the arrest, asking people to pray for Gray.

“Like so many of my constituents in Robertson County, I am deeply saddened by this situation. When we choose to seek public office, we do so with the understanding that we are held to a higher standard—by both the public and ourselves. That responsibility is not one to be taken lightly,” he said in a statement. “I remain hopeful that he will take the appropriate steps to get the help and support he needs during this time and ask for prayers for him, his family, and the county government.”

In December 2023, he was arrested after a drunken dispute outside a school. Then, in August 2024, troopers said he was caught driving his farm tractor intoxicated.

Gray entered Alford pleas in both cases — avoiding jail time by agreeing to rehab and staying out of trouble.

Sheriff Gray is due in court at 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13.
