Aiken man starts fantasy sports consulting firm as industry continues worldwide popularity

AIKEN, S.C. (WJBF) – With online gaming on the rise, one of the fastest growing industries in the world right now is Fantasy Sports.

Now, one Aiken man has started his own business to help others in the industry succeed.

Scott Hoyt has been involved with fantasy sports for nearly 4 decades.

“About 2 and a half years ago into my retirement, I realized there’s a void within the fantasy sports world. A lot of startup companies and entrepreneurs have creative ideas, but they can’t get them to market because they’re missing an element or two,” said Hoyt.

That’s what drove him to start his new business, Fantasy Sports Strategies.

Prior to this, he served in executive roles with several multi-national companies, including IBM, AT&T, Proctor and Gamble, and the Southland Corporation.

Hoyt is also an Advisory Committee Member of the Fantasy Sports and Gaming Association–the only national organization that represents the interests of relevant companies.

He’s taking his vast experience in corporate marketing to help startups and small companies succeed in the industry that is rapidly growing.

“Fantasy players who play fantasy sports used to do it as a hobby, but now people take it very passionately. The biggest ones are the content providers who provide that opportunity for deep fan engagement—so ESPN, Yahoo. The third body that makes up this ecosystem are the actual professional teams that are out there that provide the impetus to play fantasy sports,” Hoyt said.

According to data from Morder Intelligence, the fantasy sports industry is projected to bring in close to $50 billion in global revenue by 2028, and $70 billion by 2030.

Hoyt says that’s large in part due to the rise in technology.

“Technology is the biggest one you’ve seen over the years take shape, and that is everything to provide online experience for deeper fan engagement,” he said.

He says another contributing factor is the growth of sports betting—a practice that is illegal in Georgia and South Carolina.

Hoyt says they plan to abide by the law, but hope to educate people locally about the direction the industry is going.

That becomes part of the business plan. If you can’t operate in South Carolina or Georgia, you have to work around that. We want to educate a community on the benefit of fantasy sports if you want to play and want to get involved. That’s the best way to do that,” said Hoyt.

Hoyt lives in Aiken with his wife, Teresa, who returned to South Carolina in July after spending time in Phoenix, Arizona.

Before that, they moved to the area from northern Virginia in 2020.

He says what was once a hobby when he started in 1989 has turned into one of the most popular industries around the globe.

That’s why he wants to make a bigger impact.

“It is a very exciting industry to be in. I’ve been doing it for 36 years as a hobby, and now it’s turning into a passion of mine—-and now a business. So, I’m very excited to be part of the industry, and it’s really the industry that has given me the opportunity to do this,” Hoyt said.

The business will provide services through in-house staff members and independent contractors.
