Abilene ISD says security concern found during audit was resolved same day

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – A security concern was recently discovered at an Abilene ISD campus during a routine safety audit.

Deputy Superintendent Dr. Joseph Waldron said safety remains a top priority for the district, and auditors regularly test whether campuses can be accessed by unauthorized individuals as part of a broader security review.

In September, several campuses were tested, and auditors identified at least one security concern involving equipment failure. While specific details were not shared publicly, Waldron said those findings are discussed in closed session with the school board to protect security protocols.

“It’s reasonable to expect those who may be listening might want particular details or may have an interest in reviewing any of the intruder detection audit findings. However, the Texas Education Agency and the Attorney General’s opinions direct school districts to refrain from sharing any specifics,” Waldron explained. “I hope the public can appreciate that, because we don’t want to compromise the safety and security standards and safeguards that we hold dear every day in our school district.”

According to the district, the issue was addressed immediately, with the faulty equipment replaced the same day as the audit. As part of corrective action, all staff will continue receiving required safety training and reminders to secure doors at all times.
