Warming and drying trend through the midweek

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy Tuesday, Utah! Clear skies allowed for another, cool, crisp morning with lows in the upper 30s and low to mid 40s yet again. Clear skies open the door for plenty of sunshine and rebounding temperatures today means highs will be near seasonal norms. You can expect upper 60s and low 70s along the Wasatch Front, a range of 70s on the eastern side of the state and 80s in Washington County.

A southwest flow returns today and that will help bump those temepratures a little higher than we saw at the start fo the work week, and atmospherically speaking, a Rex Block is in place. A Rex Block is a blocking pattern we see in the Western Uinted States in which a high-pressure system is stacked on top of a low-pressure system, whick in this case is over the Pacific Northwest and Southern California. Air flows through it like a backward “S” and we won’t see the breakdown of the Rex block  until one of the height centers changes intensity, unbalancing the high-over-low pattern. A blocking pattern like this will keep our conditions calm so dry and mild conditions will stick around for our Wednesday, but a few clouds will be on the increase Wednesday afternoon. Highs will be in the mid 80s for southern Utah and in the mid 70s for the Wasatch Front. By Thursday, we start to see some weather changes as we welcome in our next storm system.

Changes begin Thursday, as our SW flow drags some deep, tropical oisture from what was Hurricane Priscilla in the Pacific into Utah. As moisture surges north, our oisture potential increases and then we will combine that scenario with an upper-level low from the Pacific Northwest once again moving towards the state and sending a cold front through Utah. This will bring increasing rain chances back to the Beehive state from south to north from Friday through the weekend. Right now, the wettest period looks to be Friday night into Saturday for the southern part of Utah and Saturday once again brings peak moisture along the Wasatch Front.

Temperatures will warm above average briefly Thursday with apossible day in the 80s along the Wasatch Front, before dropping again this weekend as the next upper low moves overhead. This storm system could bring potential to bring solid rain totals for the valleys and healthy snow totals for the mountains again. We will watch the flood risk as well, it will likely increase with deep tropical mositure in place. Stay tuned as we make it through the week!
