Salt Lake City declares state of emergency due to impacts of flooding in Rose Park

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Salt Lake City has declared a 30-day emergency order to support residents impacted by flooding in Rose Park over the weekend.

On Oct. 3 and 4, Salt Lake City experienced the second-wettest day in history, and the most rainfall since 1901, causing flooding across Salt Lake County. According to a press release from the Salt Lake City Mayor’s Office, more than two dozen houses in Rose Park were impacted by the flooding.

“By declaring a state of emergency, the City can access additional resources and move faster to support the families affected,” Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall stated in the press release. “It allows us to direct more city resources into cleanup, work hand-in-hand with the County and State, and open the door to financial assistance that could ease the burden for residents whose homes were damaged.”

Resources for flood recovery

Volunteers with the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stake have placed dumpsters in the area, and residents can use them to dispose of non-hazardous waste such as drywall, carpet/pad, household furnishings, and other general waste.

Salt Lake City’s Call2Haul service will also respond to collect recyclable items. Place your furnaces, mattresses, metal, tires, and electronic waste at the curb to be collected. If you have specific questions about Call2Haul, the city asks that you call them at 801-535-6953.

Separately from Call2Haul, the Salt Lake County Health Department will be collecting hazardous waste. Place items like fuels, paints, pesticides, batteries, and other hazardous materials at the curb separately from the recyclable items.
