(WHTM) — Could a solution to rising electric rates be on the roofs of Midstate warehouses?

Pennsylvania House Democrats say yes. They held a hearing Monday about House Bill 1260, which would require new warehouse in the state to be “solar ready.”

The idea? Those rooftops represent a lot of real estate to capture cheap, clean energy.

“Covering million-square-foot warehouses with solar panels is one of the easiest things we can do,” said Robert Blair, president of PA State Building and Construction Trades. “It’s a rapid deployment, they’re all modular, the infrastructure is built into the project as we build the warehouse. It also allows our warehouse developers a revenue stream because they can rent that roof space.”

The bill would require a minimum of 40% of the roof area for new warehouses designated as suitable for solar panel installation and free from obstructions. Owners of existing warehouses wouldn’t be required to retrofit them but they would get tax credits if they do.
