OGDEN, Utah (ABC4) — An active incident was reported near Ben Lomond High School after a 16-year-old was shot and killed. Other nearby schools went into lockdown.
According to Captain Tim Scott with Ogden City Police Department, a 16-year-old was shot and killed at the location of 5th and Grammercy Avenue in Ogden, Utah. Ogden City Police Investigators and Homicide Task Force are working the scene.
Ogden School District confirmed that the victim was a student at Ben Lomond High School.
Ben Lomond High, Highland Junior High School, and East Ridge Elementary School entered “secure” status as a precaution, but the lockdowns have since been lifted.
Police first received the call at 2:45 p.m., after school had been released for the day at 2:35. The victim was taken to Ben Lomond High School, where the victim was treated by school staff and school resource officers who were still in the building.
Police are working with investigators to locate next of kin of the victim. Scott also stated that there is no connection with the bomb threat incident that happened last week.
No suspect is in custody for the shooting, and Scott requested anyone with information about the case to contact police dispatch at 801-395-8221. He also asked for anyone who lives in the area to check their doorbell or security cameras.
According to Scott, the investigation is still in its preliminary stages, and they cannot release additional information because it may compromise the search for the suspect.
Ogden School District released a statement confirming that there was a shooting in the vicinity of 7th Street and Monroe Blvd. The school district stated that law enforcement confirmed to them that there was never an active threat to students or staff on campus. Lockdowns have been lifted.
Highland Junior High School initiated a secure protocol as a precaution, where no one is allowed in or out of the building. At 3:10 p.m., police cleared the school, and students were released to go home.
East Ridge Elementary School had also already released students at the time of the incident, but it also initiated a secure status as a precaution because some employees and students were still in the building.
Extracurricular activities for Ben Lomond High School are canceled for today.
Ogden School District stated that there will be counselors and other support professionals available on campus tomorrow and for the rest of the week to provide support for any students or staff who need assistance.
This is the second incident at Ben Lomond High School in less than a week. On October 2, Ben Lomond high was evacuated due to a bomb threat. The school was thoroughly searched, and no explosives were found, but police continued to treat it as a serious threat.
Earlier today, police detained a juvenile male in connection with the bomb threat. Reportedly, police located the suspect in Washington state. The suspect’s identity has not been released due to his age. The investigation into the bomb threat is still an active investigation and Ogden PD are working with state, federal, and local agencies.
