Jefferson Parish hosts Night Out Against Crime community events

JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — Jefferson Parish’s Night Out Against Crime celebration had over two dozen locations hosting events.

One location was found at Munholland Methodist Church ran by the Brockenbraugh and Homestead association.

The association’s president, Grant Worrell, says she has hosted her party for years looking to give back to her local law enforcement community.

“I mean it’s a great opportunity to meet them, to get their contact information, and to know that they are there in case you are to ever need anyone,” Worrell said.

She says these events are an opportunity for in-person conversations between law enforcement leaders and city officials on the latest projects happening in their communities.

“We are actually currently working with Project NOLA to get crime cameras installed in the neighborhood through the association, which is a great opportunity for us to connect with the police because they monitor the cameras as well,” Worrell said.

Jefferson Parish Councilwoman Jennifer Van Vranken says events like these highlight the parish’s tight-knit community.

“We know our neighbors and if you see something suspicious, you’re going to immediately call JPSO to respond or other local law enforcement,” Van Vrancken said.

Crimestoppers’ Darlene Cusanza says that that is a key deterrent for crime.

“If we’re together here, we put our lights on our porches whenever, you know, that tells people don’t who want to do the right thing, possible criminals that hey, we’re here, we’re watching. We’re all going to be here together, supporting each other,” Cusanza said.
