“Trump and the thuggery that his agents have brought has actively made us less safe,” Pritzker said during a press conference in downtown Chicago. “They have struck fear in our communities, including, notably, fear in the hearts of U.S. citizens.”
The remarks came as Illinois filed a federal lawsuit seeking to block the deployment of National Guard troops to the city. Pritzker said the raids and troop movements are part of a broader authoritarian strategy by the Trump administration.
“This is not about fighting crime or about public safety,” Pritzker said. “This is about sowing fear and intimidation and division among Americans.”
The governor also accused Trump of using military-style tactics to create chaos and justify further federal intervention.
“They think they can fool us all into thinking that the way to get out of this crisis that they created is to give them free rein,” he said. “That plan will only work if we let it.”
Pritzker vowed to resist what he called a “power grab,” saying, “The state of Illinois is going to use every lever at our disposal to resist this power grab and get [Homeland Security Secretary Kristi] Noem’s thugs the hell out of Chicago.”
The Trump administration has defended the raids, citing a need to remove dangerous criminals and restore order in cities it claims are overwhelmed by violence. President Trump has described Chicago as a “war zone” and said residents are demanding federal help.
A federal judge is expected to hear arguments Thursday on Illinois’ request for a temporary restraining order to halt the troop deployment.
