Former Prince George’s County police officer awarded $2M in lawsuit against department

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — A jury awarded a former Prince George’s County Police Department officer $2.3 million in a lawsuit against the police department.

In the suit, Mohamed Magassouba claimed that he was discriminated against and faced a hostile work environment after he said he refused to lie on an arrest report.

The lawsuit claimed that in January 2019, he and another officer responded to a report of disorderly conduct. Magassouba claimed that the other officer, who was white, used unjustified force on a potential suspect during what Magassouba said was an unlawful arrest.

Court documents said that the officer tried to arrest a Black woman “who was simply walking home from the store one night with her son.” According to documents, her son recorded the arrest, which was posted online and shared on social media platforms.

He said he faced backlash afterwards at work and was ultimately fired for not lying about what happened.

While the jury ruled that he was retaliated against, they did not say it was due to his race.

DC News Now reached out to the Prince George’s County Police Department for a statement but did not hear back at the time of publication.
