8-year-old boy marks a year of healing with pizza party after being shot in 2024

CHICAGO (WGN) — An eight-year-old boy whose life was forever changed by gun violence a year ago was welcomed home after school with balloons, Ninja Turtles shirts, chips, and pizza. It was a surprise celebration of survival and strength.

Loved ones gathered at his grandmother’s house to honor Zayden Garrett’s brave spirit and remarkable recovery.

“That day was crazy, but today, on this day I’m so glad he’s here,” said Zayden’s grandmother, Rosie Liggins.

“Through the grace of God. That’s the only thing I can say. So thankful and grateful,” said Zayden’s great grandmother, Gracie Liggins.

On October 7, 2024, Zayden was shot inside his grandmother’s home in the 11600 block of South Yale Avenue in Chicago’s West Pullman neighborhood.

The family had just gotten home after ordering a pizza and were about to sit down to eat when the gunfire erupted.

Chicago police said more than 20 rounds were fired from a white Audi sedan into the house.

“By the time Zayden opened up the door, the shots rang out, and once the shots rang out, as he was running, the bullet ended up hitting him in the back and one grazed him across his head,” Rosie Liggins said.

Zayden’s uncle, who was standing near the front door, was hit in the arm and chest.

That night, Zayden never got to take a single bite of pizza. Instead, he spent seven days in the hospital, undergoing surgeries that removed half of his right lung and part of his left.

Now, a year later, Zayden is stronger than ever and finally able to enjoy every slice, a true taste of healing and resilience.

“Excited, happy, (ready to) party,” Zayden said.

His family says justice has yet to be served. Chicago police confirmed no arrests have been made in the case.
