The October supermoon, also known as the Harvest Moon, October Full Moon, or Hunter’s Moon, is special because it shines brighter and more colorfully than a typical full moon. It also appears much larger than a typical full moon. The influx in size comes from the supermoon being near perigee, its closest point to Earth in its orbit, according to space.com.
2025 is expected to have three supermoons, beginning with the October Harvest Moon. Although this month’s supermoon is by far the largest, another one is expected to surpass it in size. The November supermoon (Beaver Moon) on Nov. 5 will be the biggest supermoon of the year, according to NASA. It will be followed by another smaller supermoon (Cold Moon) on Dec. 4.
In addition to the October supermoon, the Draconid meteor shower also kicks off on Monday and is expected to last through Friday, giving skygazers an abundance of solar activity to witness. The Draconid meteor shower happens every October as Earth passes through debris from Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner, causing the particles to burn up in the atmosphere as visible streaks of light.
The Harvest Moon is expected to reach peak illumination at 8:47 p.m. on Monday. No special equipment is needed to observe the supermoon. For best viewing, observers should choose a spot with an unobstructed view of the horizon, such as a field, park, and be away from city lights during peak illumination.
