Judge April Perry, appointed by President Biden, scheduled a hearing for Thursday to consider Illinois’ request for a temporary restraining order. The decision came hours after Governor J.B. Pritzker and Attorney General Kwame Raoul filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, calling the deployment “illegal” and “unconstitutional.”
Despite the legal pushback, approximately 200 Texas National Guard troops are expected to arrive in Chicago by Tuesday. An additional 300 Illinois Guard members are slated to begin training the same day, unless the court intervenes.
President Trump defended the move, labeling Chicago a “war zone” and pointing to a recent spike in shootings and homicides in the city.
In a separate development Monday, federal prosecutors charged a man in Illinois with murder-for-hire, alleging he offered $10,000 for the killing of a senior Border Patrol official.
Also on Monday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson issued an executive order declaring the city an ICE-free zone. The order prohibits federal immigration agents from using city-owned property for enforcement operations and outlines procedures for city employees to report any such attempts.
