Early last Tuesday morning, agents stormed the building near South Shore Drive and 75th Street. Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino said the operation targeted members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua.
However, some elected leaders, advocates and residents say innocent people, including children, had their doors kicked in and family members pulled from their homes in the middle of the night.
Bovino acknowledged that several U.S. citizens were temporarily detained during the operation.
On Sunday, community members gathered outside the building, calling for transparency and alleging the raid left many residents traumatized. They also pointed to other recent enforcement actions in the area and accused the Trump administration of tearing families apart.
Among their demands were a meeting with the head of Chicago’s ICE Field Office, increased oversight of the Broadview processing center and a broader investigation into ICE activity across the city and region.
“(Secretary) Kristi Noem has proudly gone on TV and said, ‘Chicago get ready because the Department of War is coming.’ An American city. A cabinet leader has declared war on an American city,” said Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-Illinois 3rd District).
Federal officials have maintained that Operation Midway Blitz, which remains active in the area, is focused on undocumented immigrants with criminal records who they say pose a threat to public safety.
