Louisiana preps for 2026 closed party primary, here’s what you need to know

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – Registered voters in Louisiana have received mailers from the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office about changes to the state’s new closed party primaries.

Louisiana is not completely abandoning its “jungle primary” process. Still, votes cast during the primary for U.S. House and Senate seats, the Louisiana Supreme Court, the Public Service Commission (PSC), and the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) will be aligned by party. Other ballot contests will be open to all voters.

This change to certain primaries being closed was made by the Louisiana Legislature, as outlined in Act 1 of the 2024 First Extraordinary Session, ensuring that only registered members can vote for their party’s candidate.

What this means is not every vote on every contest. Democrats will vote for Democratic candidates, Republicans for Republican candidates, and “No Party” unaffiliated voters may select either party.

In advance of the April 18, 2026, Party Primary, the Secretary of State is encouraging all residents to KNOW – Keep registration current, Not everyone will vote on every contest, Only the following offices are part of the Closed Party Primary. Where can you find more information?

The last day to register or make registration changes in person or by mail is March 18, 2026. Online registration is available until March 28 via the Geaux Vote mobile app. The deadline to make changes to your voter registration in person or by mail is April 29, 2026; online registration closes on May 9, 2026.
