(KRON) — Vallejo police are investigating the city’s ninth traffic collision of the year after a woman died of injuries tied to trying to get into a moving vehicle.

Police said they were contacted by the Napa County Sheriff’s Office on Oct.1 about a traffic collision that occurred Sept. 30 in the area of Broadway and Mahogany streets, which later ended in a fatality. Vallejo police soon took over the case since the incident happened within their city limits.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, a vehicle was traveling near Mahogany Street and Broadway Street when a female known to the driver attempted to enter the vehicle while it was in motion,” said Vallejo police. “The female was unable to enter the vehicle and fell while the vehicle was still in motion. The driver stopped the vehicle, assisted the female back inside, and left the area without reporting the incident. The female declined medical treatment, and the two occupants returned to Napa County.”

Officials said the driver called 911 the following day and asked for emergency medical assistance when they discovered the victim unresponsive at her Napa County home. The woman was pronounced deceased at the residence by medics. An autopsy conducted Oct. 2 determined the woman’s “cause of death was consistent with a motor vehicle accident,” confirmed police.

Vallejo police said 12 people have died this year due to the nine traffic collisions.
