BROADVIEW, Ill. (WGN) — A protest is underway outside the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) processing center in suburban Broadview Saturday evening, drawing a growing crowd and heightened emotions.

The demonstration began at 4 p.m., and within the first hour, about 100 people had gathered, with the number continuing to rise. Protesters shouted at federal agents as they entered and exited the facility, moving through barricades that were set up last week.

Saturday’s action is part of an ongoing wave of demonstrations — daily for the past two weeks and sporadically over the last six weeks — sparked by Operation Midway Blitz, a federal immigration enforcement campaign. Since its launch in early September, the operation has resulted in more than 900 arrests across the Chicago area, with many of those detained brought to the Broadview facility.

The Trump administration has said the operation is a necessary step to remove dangerous criminals and strengthen public safety. But critics argue the raids have fueled fear, racial profiling and harm in immigrant communities.

“I came here last Friday, and it was frightening. I think that having the ability to even put yourself a little bit on the line, in the hopes that it will shift somebody even in the slightest, it feels good,” said protester Dominique Sherter.

So far, no arrests have been made at Saturday’s demonstration, though five people were arrested at the same facility during protests on Friday.
