According to officials from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, the crash unfolded around 1:10 p.m. Friday along Route 173, east of Route 41.
Deputies say the motorcyclist was headed westbound along Route 173 when a 38-year-old woman driving the opposite direction in a Nissan Rogue attempted to make a left turn, turning directly in the path of the motorcyclist.
The motorcyclist, a 68-year-old man, crashed into the side of the car and was thrown from his bike. Deputies said that amid the crash, his leg was severed.
By the time deputies arrived on the scene, good Samaritans had already applied a belt as a tourniquet to a leg of the motorcyclist.
The motorcyclist was later hospitalized in critical condition.
Deputies said the driver of the Nissan was not injured in the crash and is cooperating with law enforcement.
An investigation into the crash is underway by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.
