When the Loys Station covered bridge, located off Maryland Route 77, was hit on September 27, it caused the structure to close. The driver fled the scene, and the Frederick County Sheriff is investigating.
Resident Tara Miller took note of the bridge closing and said the bridge was more than a structure; it was a place she created memories with her family.
“I take my children to that bridge to wade and fish in the creek,” Miller said.
Fellow nearby resident Frank Valentine said this latest incident at the bridge does not surprise him.
“They’ve been hit several times, and the county has put up posts to designate the height of a truck that can go through it,” said Valentine.
In fact, the nearby Old Mill Road Bridge is undergoing repairs from truck damage last December. Repairs to the Loys Station Bridge are expected to take about three weeks.
“The impact on traffic is quite inconvenient when they get closed down,” Miller explained.
